"We'll Focus on the NFL"

Please excuse my temporary "hiatus", it's good to be back. Now that College football is pretty much over, and that the BCS whining is over (we are of the strong opinion here that the BCS DID get it right, so much so, it's not even worth a post to defend such--though, we have legit reasons)-- the NFL is what dominates sports center. Despite our SEC bias and CFB prejudice, we have to admit that the NFL is what america is all about. The rest of the country is of the opinion that the NFL is the best sports out there. Not here to debate that, but to ride that opinion with my own thoughts on this years season and what i presume will happen in the post-season.

Prelimiary Comments: Being a good "Van Tillian", I acknowledge these are not facts, but my interpretation of the facts due to prior convictions. This is what I bring into any NFL discussion: I strongly HATE the Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers---all these teams are over-hyped by media and would have never made it to the superbowl had they played in the AFC, the media continually talks about these teams in blatent contradiction to their records. Secondly, I know that Tom Brady is whiner who has ridden the coat tails of a great defense and some luck-still i acknowledge he's a winner. Bill Billicheck is the NFL anti-christ, evil and easily despised. I loath the NE patriots. I am a Colts fan and a Titans fan (which is kind of absurd b/c they are in the same division), i have lots of respect for almost every team i don't hate.

NFC: Nothing creative about this, but the NFC is terrible. I was one though, that strongly laughed at all the ESPN analysts who predicted the Carolina Panthers winning the NFC, I actually called ESPN radio in August and told Sean Salsbury that he was absurd for picking Carolina- he said call back in January and "We'll talk then"...Sean, i have the number on speed dial . I've always thought Jake Delhomme sux - he got lucky 1x. The Seattle Seahawks were the WORST team the NFC has ever sent to the super bowl, Matt Hasselback is not good and Shaun Alexander is soft. The thing about the NFC is that the media refuses to acknowledge the good teams and keeps trying prove why teams like Carolina and Seattle are just about to turn the corner. Chicago is good, New Orleans is good, Dallas is good...there you go.
playoffs - I think Philadelphia and the Giants will get the Wild Card's due to a process of elimination. I'm not sure how the bracket will look, more than likely Dallas will have to play Chicago in the 2nd round. New Orleans will make the NFC championship game b/c they will likely play Seattle or Philadelphia--both are terrible. Tough call, but to me Super bowl team will either be Dallas or Chicago winner--I'll go with Chicago at home. Chicago's D in that Cold weather will be so tough. Dallas has best chance to knock them off in those conditions. Sorry, no New Orleans this year.

AFC: This has been strange, things change like crazy. Earlier in year it seemed Denver and Indy were clearly best teams. Baltimore has come out of nowhere and is not being talked about enough. NE still hangs around, but are not impressive. San Diego is good b/c of steroid pumping Merriman and LT--who is just plain sick! Indy won't make it far with their defense, too much to ask of Manning. NE would maybe win NFC, but whaaawhaaa they won't get teams at home in the snow, so they lose. Cincinatti will make Playoffs, and could make a strong run, though having to play all away games will be difficult. AFC championship game will be Baltimore over San Diego in San Diego, I like Steve McNair's experience and Baltimores D to 'contain' LT, slow him down just enough.

Super Bowl: Baltimore scores a late TD and beats Chicago 17-13. Ed Reed is super bowl MVP

NFL MVP: Ladanian Tomlinson...no voting will actually be neccessary.

Coach of the Year: Eric Mangieni, NY Jets.

Other thoughts: Philadelphia will find a way to blame their playoff loss on T.O., who will then make his case for MVP. T.O. will then demand he be traded; New England in a perpetual state of whining will sign T.O. for the first ever 1/2 season contract promising payment upon performance. Tom Brady whining about missing the Super Bowl will boast to the media that "At least Indianapolis didn't make it!". Continuing loyalty to theirselves, Billichick will cut T.O. and then Brady, believing that Vinny Testaverde can carry his team all the way while saving him tons of $$.....stranger things have happened eh???

I think you're a little too bitter about Brady owning your boy for years...but that is understandable.

you just never know in the NFL what will happen...everything changes so much every week. I will make my picks before playoffs start...but before season I picked Denver over Dallas in super bowl...not lookin too good there.

Baltimore doesn't have enough O to get there...I would still go w/Indy to get there, and who knows in NFC.

My picks in week one were the Bears and the Bengals in the Super Bowl. I stick with the Bears at this point, but would put the Chargers in the place of the Bengals.

Mangini? Are you kidding me? They've looked okay, but I think it's just because of how awful everyone assumed they would be. Sean Payton is a shoe-in for coach of the year - not LT-for-MVP quality shoe-in, but more like Troy Smith for Heisman shoe-in.

Also, and this is a pointless observation, if LT didn't exist, Drew Brees would be MVP. We Saints fans take 'em when we can get 'em.

Baltimore & my fantasy team took a huge hit when that guy used his cleat to punch a hole in McNair's hand...(insert curse words here)...

...anyway...just wanted to say three things in regards to the post...

1. Shaun Alexander is not soft. He'd only missed one half of one game (b/c his first child was being born) in his entire career up until this year and no mortal man can withstand the Madden Curse...so no blame there.

2. How can anyone who follows Peyton Manning (creator of the Manning-face) call any other athlete in the history of sports a whiner?

3. If the Saints make it to the Super Bowl, will the other team just admit that no one in the world outside of their home city wants them to win and forfeit? I think that would be fair.

-Baltimore did win a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer playing quarterback so not that much offense is needed.

-The Colts currently have one of the worst run defenses in the HISTORY of the NFL. I can see them getting obliterated in the playoffs by some team that refuses to even try to throw the ball, i.e. the Ravens and Jags (if they make it).

-I think Tomlinson now deserves the MVP after Brees took a fat dump in the Redskins game. Not to mention he's set the single season NFL touchdown record, which I think people (media types) are ignoring because Brees is the feel good story.

-As for the Super Bowl, who knows in the NFC. I would like to think the Bears, but Grossman can't be trusted. Between the Cowboys and Bears, I think whoever fixes their defense will come out of the NFC.

-AFC...The Chargers look good, but their head coach, Marty Schottenheimer, is one of the great all-time choke job artists. He'll kill them in the playoffs. I'll take Air II and his Baltimore Ravens using the same formula that one them their first Super Bowl.

That would be "won" and not "one." Yes, I am a college graduate.

I jsut don't think Baltimore has the same D that they did in 2000, and they are too inconsistent on offense.
Indy looked good last nigth stopping the run, and they have the best QB in football, which helps, even if he is a whiney bitch (I'm going to get deleted now).

Cowboys can go all the way if they don't shoot themselves in foot...like Bears will with Grossman.

Seriously, has one player ever looked so unhappy playing football?

I like watching him play, but his constant state of aggravation and bitchitude makes me nauseous.

The Chargers are the closest thing to a total package that there is in the NFL. On offense they can pummel you into oblivion with the run, or they can go to the air with a serviceable and consistent, if not spectacular, passing game. On defense, it really does surprise me how much difference one guy can make, but Merriman is Urlacher-like (we'll soon be saying Willis-like), in that he can effectively drop into coverage, play the line, or blitz. The rest of their defense is good enough that you can't just focus on him.

And - speaking of Manning, the opening to Monday Night Football last night, with the old guy from the DirecTv commercials making fun of all the players, and Ben Stiller mocking Peyton Manning, was hilarious. I usually hate that stuff, but this time they hit gold. If they only could have gotten the douche-bags in the booth to talk about the game...

How did this discussion get on Manning? i didn't even bring him up in the post. Since we are on it, he always looks pissed and unhappy because he is MORE serious than any other player in the league. He's on the extreme of maybe taking it TOO serious, to him, College football was fun-the NFL is not fun, all business.

as far as Super Bowl picks, I don't hesitate to disagree with Luke about Baltimore. Sure there 'D' is not as good as 00', but that was the best D of all time. I love Indy, but Manning just won't be able to play like he did last night against Chargers and Ravens in back to back weeks. Hard to argue against San Diego with LT.

I understand Saints are the 'feel good story' and Brees is the lead role in that movie, But Tomlinson is CLEARLY the best player in the NFL. He's so much better than any running back, and yes Shaun Alexander is soft (Luke, back me up on this one). I wouldn't be against making Brees the first-team all pro QB, it's nice to change it up from year to year.

As far as coach of the year, listen i know you Mississippi boys love your Saints...as well you should. Sean Payton has done an AMAZING job turning them around. But two reasons my vote goes to Mangini,

#1 - NFC/AFC, The NFC is just lousy. Mangini is winning in a much tougher conference against much tougher teams.

#2 - Talent, Now Payton has done wonders for helping mature that Talent- but compare Brees to Pennington and Bush/McCallister to Houston/Washington...not even close, Jets have NO talent and are somehow winning. Very few of their players could start on most winning teams.

breaking news....a "bitteremotion" day here, Iverson has just been traded to Denver. In actuality, the 76ers got VERY lucky. They are getting MUCH more than they ever thought they would get: Andre Miller, Joe Smith, and 2 first round draft picks-wow! Still, it is sad not to see Iverson in Philadelphia

secondly...maybe the only sportscaster as bad as Lou Holtz on ESPN is Skip Bayless. Does anyone else think this guy is an idiot?? He just revealed his top 5 NFC/AFC teams (since we are on the topic), in AFC he still puts Bengals and Patriots ahead of Colts-despite the Colts handling both teams. In NFC, get this, his #1 team is THE EAGLES!! are you kidding me?? His #5 is the Washington Redskins, which he thinks is just a shade above Dallas...am i alone in thinking this guy is one speech slur from being Lou Holtz??

For the record, I am from Mississippi and I hate the Saints.

As a disclaimer, I think Skip Bayless is an idiot as well, but he's not too far off about the Skins...they've either won or beaten the spread (tough to do in the NFL) in every game since Campbell took over...they play everybody tough (and they should the way they pay their assistant coaches)...but there is no way they will make the playoffs...

At 2:57 PM, Blogger Alex said...

Kurt, yeah- i think i agree with you about skins. They rarely have been blown out- except by Eagles and Colts. Still, to claim them as 5th best team in NFC?? Bayless today made more of an idiot of self in his Pro-bowl analyses. He strongly upheld Tony Romo, despite only 8 games, and Viciously attacked the absence of Tom Brady. He again dogged Mike Vick...is this guy racist??

Skip Bayless and Woody Paige are the ultimate examples of sportwriters gone bad. They come up with BS opinions just to make a story of their opinions. Bayless is the worst at this. he loves to hear himself talk and loves to be beligerent. Sad thing is he used to be a great writer when he was with the Dallas Morning News in the 90s. He is so full of himself now it is ridiculous. Round the Horn and stuff has made sportswriters mini-celebrities who say ridiuclous stuff to get press. Bayless is prime example.

And, yes, Shaun Alexander is a soft piece of trash, and so are the Seahawks. Alexander is a pansy little girlie man.
