You Decide January 2007

Our unmanly award of the week goes to Bruce Pearl, head coach of the Tennessee Vols basketball team. Bruce meated out and painted his body for a LADY Vols basketball game. I repeat, he painted up for a female basketball game. I have nothing else to add. Would I tell Bruce he is unmanly to his face...absolutely not. As I was watching Bruce jump up and down like a crazy man, the resemblance to Ed Orgeron started freaking me out. I don’t know who is more of a meathead. So I put the question to our readers.

The question for our readers today is, Who is more insane and therefore would you least like to meet in a confrontation in a back alley? Our two contestants are Bruce Pearl (Head basketball coach of Tennessee and“Hulk” impersonator) and Ed Orgeron (Head football coach of Ole Miss, Hummer lover and meathead supreme). I wouldn’t want you guys to vote without being informed so watch these quick videos and cast your vote. The Bruce Pearl video needs no explanation...He is simply off his rocker.

However, with a plethora of videos (the hummer video did not make the cut) to choose from, I picked two of Ed Orgeron. In the first, coach “O” is in the bottom right corner of your screen firing up his players…”O” style (unfortunately Youtube would not let me embed the video so you will have to click on the link). In the second video, apparently CSS interviewed players asking them to imitate their coach. Fast Forward to about 42 seconds into the video. At that point you will hear Robert Lane describe coach ‘O” with the phrase “dislocates his jaw.” Then, the camera switches to “O”, and he gives the camera the scariest look I’ve ever seen followed by and even more psychotic chuckle.

1st video (O fired up)

I cast my vote with Ed Orgeron. If he gave me that look in a back alley somewhere, I would go ahead and try to knock myself out before he got the chance. Bruce is giving Ed a good run for his money, but I think at the end of the day, Ed would finally headbutt Bruce and call it a day.

Keep it up fellas!

Bruce Pearl is crazy...who cares, Tennessee Basketball is winning--Ole Miss Football is not. Enough for me...

Oh yeah...and Brian, it is never "unmanly" to paint your body...NEVER (i.e. David Puddy), even in the most absurd of circumstances like a woman's basketball game....in fact, i believe it is a "manly" policy to paint your body whenever you can. Who doesn't salute those Packers fans who paint there body in -2 degrees or the Raiders fans who paint despite there teams 5 wins in 2 years. I salute body painting -- still Bruce Pearl is crazy

body painting for a women's game is unacceptable in all cases. in the first place, it acknowledges that the sport has SOME relevance, however small. this cannot be! at this moment there is no bigger queer outside of bruce pearl. none. all the more reason to hate the him.

at this point we must distinguish the act of body painting from the act of supporting women's basketball. Your looking at Bruce Pearl all wrong, comparing him in your mind to such men as Coach K, Dean Smith. You see, When you think of Bruce Pearl you really need to think of a cross between Bobby Cox and John 'Bluto' Blutarsky.

I think that body painting is only manly for a brief period of time in one's life, much like wearing team jerseys. Once you get above a certain age, it's time to dress and act like an adult at the game. I'm not going to say for certain what age it is, but it's like the Supreme Court and pornography: I know it when I see it. Disclaimer: This is coming from the guy who wore a Brett Favre jersey to Soldier Field on New Years' Eve...

yeah...i hear you charles, but I live in Philadelphia...Philadelphia. That is, on the day of the Eagles/Saints divisional playoff game I was at the mall with my wife and there were grandma's, old dudes, rich dudes, obvious blue collar dudes, teenage girls, moms, and even toddlers---all wearing Eagles Jerseys. Wearing the Jersey to the game is one thing - but to the Mall?? Maybe it's just a regional thing...

I'm sorry Alex, I'm going with Joel on this one. Though we blog together, any show of support for Women's basketball is unacceptable on my manly chart.

not disagreeing with you...see comment above about distinguishing the acts. I commend body painting, but not supporting the women's basketball game...

Brian, as much as I agree with you generally, I'm going with Alex. Now, Pearl is way out of control for getting painted up to support future stars of the WNBA, but we've got to remember the man-mentality of not giving a crap about why we do things. So I think that getting painted up and attending a female sport isn't necessarily getting painted up to support that sport.

This kind of things is why everybody outside of his current school looks on Bruce Pearl with disdain. Ironically, this is also why people, where ever he coaches, love him while he's there.

All I can say is that this better not motivate Pat Summitt to paint her chest for the men's games. I prefer my retinas non-burned.

Kurt Cooper takes home the comment of the week.

Bruce Pearl should refuse to play on that court as long as "The Summit" is written across it. That makes me want to vomit every time I see it. I'd rather play all my games on the road than on something that celebrates women's basketball.

i am fine if pearl wants to paint his chest for a football game, baseball game, or even a soccer game. but i have to believe that his painting up for a women's game was in support of that program. i refuse to believe that you can separate the two. because of his ill-advised antics, i had to withstand 5 minutes of sportSCenter covering the lady vols. that is in violation of what should be my right to a female-free SC.

I can't wait to meet Joel one day...I would like to shake your hand.

as outsiders, you must know that while Pearl's actions are "lunatickish" and pyschotic...these are actions were and are a genious publicity stunt. Think about this....We are talking about Tennessee Basketball...Tennessee Basketball...who would have ever thought the day that would ever be an interesting conversation.

alex,

i understand the point you are trying to make, and it is very nearly correct. but you must remember this took place at a WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAME! Chris Lofton is single-handedly making ut bball relevant again. winning games on a national stange is making it relevant again. there is no genius in acknowleding women's sports, ESPECIALLY BASKETBALL! and i daresay you are borderline treasoness for even offering a half-hearted defense of Pearl. i suppose you don't think it's a travesty that your girl candace parker "won" the dunk contest a couple years back either? either way, i still love you, and becki too.
