Tubs speaks out

I'm gonna have to agree with Tommy Tuberville on this one. It is time to go to a stinkin playoff system. I'm sure many will disagree, but let's end the arguments and make sure USC/Ohio State/Auburn actually face off against each other. I don't really think there should be more than a 4 team playoff system, 8 at the most. It's just ridiculous that you can do everything in your power and still not have a shot at the NCAA title. What other sport does that? Any thoughts from our 5 regular readers? Oh, and we can still have bowl games for teams that don't make the playoffs. By all means, keep the Independence Bowl, it is the only chance Ole Miss has at a postseason most years.

I think Tubbs has a valid point, but how do you go about selecting the four, eight, or whatever number of teams for the playoff? That selection process will probably be just as controversial as the current system as someone will be left out. If you go to a playoff system, I think you'd have to have divisions (like the NFL) and possibly do away with conferences. I'd like to see a playoff, but I don't think it's as easy to change as we think.

Also, Tubbs is in danger of becoming the Ron Polk of college football. Polk likes to complain about the lack of scholarships for NCAA baseball (and he's right), but change won't happen any time soon. But Polk has complained so much, no one really listens to him anymore. I think Tubbs should try to gather support for this before he continues his one man crusade against the NCAA.

6 team play off, with top two teams getting 1st round byes.....would be controversial in choosing teams, but nothing compared to crap of past few years.

college football, is only collegient sport to not have an NCAA sanctioned national champion

i would prefer 8 or 4, just because the byes would cause even another reason for people to complain. people will still complain about getting left out. but let's be honest, 8 covers everyone, but really only the top six will have a chance. keep the bowls, use the BCS bowls for the playoff. and don't give me crap about the season ending too late. start a little earlier. not to mention the championship game is jan. 8th this year. and TT's right. playing in the sec, rarely are we gonna have a chance. hardly ever does anyone go undefeated, and if they do and are one of three undefeated teams, and those teams are from the big 11, pac-10 or notre dame, we'll get screwed out of the championship game

Yeah, that whole crap about the season lasting too long is ridiculous. Every single year the championship game gets pushed further and further back. And most teams now play a 12 game schedule. That argument is a crock, I wish they'd just admit it's all about the money, of which the 18-22 year olds see none even though they basically generate it.

somehow the NCAA "forgets" 1-AA ball...they have a playoff, so does Div II. they try to argue that a playoff will get in the way of school, somehow it just doesn't in 1-AA schools. Also, you can't tell me that a football playoff would make kids miss more school than the NCAA basketball tourney where games fall on thursdays/fridays...at least all
football games are on saturdays.

also, with this $$ thing. It's also illegal for coaches to see any money "not in their contract", a tennessee assistant got in trouble this summer b/c he recieved an "honorarium" at picnic bbq he spoke at in which i think he recieved around $300 ---yet it's totally ok for Notre Dame to have an exclusive multi-million dollar contract with NBC??

i hate the NCAA. anybody see the SI article (i think reilly) about the long distance runner who had the fastest qualifying time in the nation his senior year, and the NCAA wouldn't let him run in the national championships because his coach accidentally clicked on the wrong bubble online. even though the event had two less runners than it usually did and the mistake was found a week in advance and it would have been nothing to just add the kid to the list?

How about the NCAA determining which mascots are politically correct? FSU gets to keep "Seminoles" but North Dakota can't keep the "Fighting Souix" because the logo and name are offensive? FSU has a freaking Seminole Indian painted at midfield with war paint, not to mention the dude that rides in on the horse and spikes a flamming spear into the ground.

What the hell does North Dakota do differently? Wait, I know. They don't make money for the NCAA. If they did, they'd get to keep their name. I'd like to see the NCAA focus on something important like academic fraud or providing for student athletes instead of this high horse bullcrap. I find it hard to believe mascot names is the most important issue facing the NCAA today.

I have a flaming spear to chuck in the ground. And that's not a euphamism. I literally have a flaming spear that i'm about to throw into the ground.

My couple o' cents: I like the playoff system. I don't like the BCS. But how 'bout the NCAA letting us choose who will be in the playoff. Ok, so LSU, Aurburn, Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia is in every year... what one other team gets in? This year i would vote for Ohio State.

There is the problem, the best teams in the nation all play each other every weekend. We are never going to to have the best teams cause the best teams play games like Auburn and LSU played earlier this year.

just what i am thinking.

thank goodness North Dakota's mascot is gone, I was offended everytime I had to look at it (actually...I'm not sure I've ever laid eyes on it).

The NCAA is ridiculous.

NCAA is rediculous, but I am not posting about that.

Brian I had to let you know that while I was working for maintenence today we found a lovely picture of you and your wife, for some odd reason. So what did we do with it? We took it back to the maintenence shop and put it on the dart board. I hit you in the mouth and the right upper chest! YES! Sorry if your those places hurt right now!

Eliminate conference championships and 1 pre-conference game. Take the top 8 BCS-ranked teams and play them off...seeding them 1 thru 8. That would solve all the issues. Let each game be a "bowl game" with rotations for the final between the same BCS bowls that rotate the nat'l title now.
Imagine how sweet that would be...greatest event in sports by far.
Or just take the 6 major conference champs and 2 at-large, so it would look something like this this year:
Ohio St.
Auburn
Texas
West Virginia
USC
ACC Champ (Fla. St?)
2 at large: Florida, Louisville

I'm starting to think the Mafia is behind the NCAA, especially when i hear of native-american rights being held up when $$ is not at stake. The Italians have always hated Indians...

I'm against a playoff. I know that the bowl system sucks, but here's what you lose if you go to a playoff. You lose the do-or-die mentality of EVERY game of the season. As ridiculous as it sounds, Mississippi State could have put an end to West Virginia's national title hopes last weekend (although I'm not sure they have much hope with their schedule). If we have a playoff, USC doesn't have to win against UCLA, Ohio State/Michigan is about seeding, not do-or-die...

...if there was a way to have a playoff and not compromise the importance of every regular season game, then I'd be for it...but once you go to a playoff, you'll end up with March Madness (which is fun to watch) i.e., a post-season tournament that renders the regular season almost meaningless...

...of course, in my opinion, the SEC Champion is the National Champion every year until proven otherwise...

Oh yeah, do you see that book that Tuberville is "reading" in the picture? It's called Life of Pi...I've read it...its interesting but I'd love to hear Tuberville's opinion...

"It's got a cool table of contents and a TIGER on the front...War Eagle!"
