Midseason review

I have no clue what I'm doing

Like every year, there are some big suprises midway through the season and then some things have played out as predicted. A month ago the LSU/Auburn game was being hyped up with enormous BCS implications--not so much anymore. Florida had preseason hype, and has lived up to every bit of it -- Ohio State likewise. Michigan has emerged, finally, as a good team. Much to the media's dissapointment, Notre Dame is beatable and the "Classic Monday Night Showdown" between Miami/Fla. State is in retrospect a joke. Some bizzare thoughts: Arkansas is in the driver seat of the SEC west, West Virginia/Louisville may be one of the most meaningful games of the year, the Big 12 Championship game could actually be watchable, and USC may not win the Pac-10 this year.

Things we Know:
- Mississippi State belongs in 1-AA football
- Lou Holtz has a speech impediment and needs clinical help
- The SEC East is the best conference in America....the SEC West is a close second
- Somehow Brady Quinn will end of in NY for the Heisman Trophy presentation
- The chick who announces the noon ESPN2 game is definitenly a dyke
- Miami is the worst coached team in America, LSU is a close second. Both need to stop playing PS2 in order to develop game plans
- Colorado is the best 0-5 team in the past 4 years
- Notre Dame will get spanked by USC and still get a BCS bowl bid

Things we don't know:
- Who will play for national championship
- Who Will win the SEC West
- How the producers at ESPN manage to keep Lou Holtz on the Air and out of a psychiatric facility
- Who will get fired at end of season
- How many dozen doughnuts does Charlie Weis eat every day
- How good will some of these true freshman QB's be in the SEC

What each SEC team needs to do keep winning:
Alabama - get a place kicker and get a softer schedule, can't keep having these scares from Duke and Hawaii!
Auburn - realize that Brandon Cox is not Jason Campbell
Arkansas - run the ball 99% of your plays
Florida - keep the weed out of the lockeroom for 3 more months, and keep paying that lawyer
Georgia - find a QB...NOW
Kentucky - play some defense
LSU - star letting Jamarcus Russel coach the team...it can't hurt
Ole Miss - run the ball, run the ball, and when Brent Shaeffer thinks he should throw--tell him to run the ball
Mississipi State - ???????????
South Carolina - you could start by not bitchining out your coaches in front of the media
Tennessee - let Erik Ainge do his thang
Vanderbilt - Get new uniforms?? they do that about 2x a year anyway

Midseason predictions and hopes:

- If Ohio State and Michigan are undefeated when they play, the media will build it up as "THE GREATEST FOOTBALL GAME OF ALL TIME", they already love this rivalry anyway. Winner will play for national title
- Florida still has a tough road, but their defense is just brutal and tough--though this Leak/Teabow thing may backfire on Meyer
- Cal or Oregon to beat USC ending their regular season domination
- Texas looked gloomy after Ohio State, but they have rebounded as the best one-loss team. They repeat as Big 12 champs
- WVU/Louisville winner may end of undefeated and rightfully left out of BCS championship
- Clemson may win the ACC, but they do not - let me emphasize this - THEY DO NOT have any shot at playing for the BCS title (many clemson fans think they should be considered in the mix)
- on a personal note, I wish for Tennessee to run the table (going to be VERY tough, not sure they can) and get Notre Dame in a BCS bowl game. We could hang 70 on them!!

...to all of you out there, I wish the Rebs, Dawgs, Horns, and other teams solid finishes and a decent bowl, may the sweetness of your sweet-emotion not become soured.

I laughed at the Mississippi State 1-AA comment. I am in the library and hope I am disturbing someone.

I think Tenn. can run the table, LSU is the big question mark. We'll see how they rebound after last week. Good thing for Tennessee Houston Nutthouse has already pulled out his signature job saving upset, so they will beat the Razorbacks.

I hope this doesn't offend you Alex, but if I watch one more Tenessee game and they talk more about David Cutcliffe than anything else, I think I will quit watching them. How many times did the announcers infer that it was dumb for Ole Miss to fire Cutcliffe? Granted, it's not like Ole Miss has proven a point this year, but please just stop! You would have to be an Ole Miss fan to understand.

I hope somehow Notre Dame gets left out of the BCS...but if they do get in, please, oh please let them play and SEC team and get HAMMERED.

2) I think Lou Holtz had a stroke which is why he probably talks like that.

3) I love these football analyses!

1) I won't comment on this ever again, but my favorite football team since I was a little kid has been Notre Dame probably because I was Roman Catholic. (I put this last because you guys wouldn't read anymore if I put it first).

brian...yes I understand the "Cutcliffe" thing is a sensitive subject with you guys, which is why i intentionally left it out of the review. All I will say is that I am glad he is the offensive coordinator at Tennessee and that he is coaching Erik Ainge. Ainge went from one of the biggest jokes in college football (his infamous interception against LSU) to most everyone's mid-season player of the year the in SEC. I can imagine that is getting annoying though, they just need to talk more about the excellent job Cutcliffe has done in turning around Ainge's career.

Dear Sweet Emotion,

To be a little more specific... Mississippi State belongs in the AA Division of the MHSAA.

Three Shocking Predictions:

1. Tennessee comes back to win the East...

2. Alabama finishes last in the West...

3. Matt Flynn is the starter at LSU before the year is out...

Alex- Don't get me wrong. I think Cutcliffe is doing a great job, and I think Ainge would tell you that. I just hate how they equate being a good offensive coordinator at UT with being a great head coach.

Bold prediction Cut...that would mean Florida loses two games? We shall see

I agree w/Kurt. Florida will lose to Auburn and Georgia I bet.

Best case scenario:
Louisville beats WV. and doens't get title game even though unbeaten...those bastards.
Ohio St. crushes Michigan
USC loses to Cal. or Oregon
Oklahoma runs table, making Texas look much better.
UT rematches Ohio St. in title game and wins.

the chick doing the noon game on ESPN makes me truly grateful for Lincoln Financial. i repent from having taken it and jp sports for granted for so long

Brian, i think your right about Cutcliffe, and for that reason i hope he stays at UT for a long time.

...and yes, we as SEC fans should be oh so grateful our noon games are broadcast on anything but ESPN2, if that ever happens--i just mute the TV and listen to radio broadcast. but ya gotta love that enthusiasm "What a whopper we have today between the Mighty wildcats of Kentucky and the Ferocious Bulldogs of Mississipi State!!!" and then the broadcaster, Dave Rowe, announces like it's the SEC championship game and his color-man finds one player who is most loyal fans have never really heard of and talks about him the whole game.....good stuff

Sweet Emotion needs to take it easy on the MSU Bulldogs (athletic budget 18 Million)...sure, State is the doormat of the SEC, and an automatic victory for just about everybody...but the Bulldogs won 3 games last year...and that's only two less than Tennessee (athletic budget +100 Million)...

I would like to see Sweet Emotion address Alabama's uniforms this weekend. I realize that's kind of a womanly thing to notice about a football game, but they're wearing houndstooth around the necks of the jerseys... Does that kind of creep anybody else out - that they're putting the color of a dead former coach's hat on their jersey? And if anybody here responds with, "But, it's the Bear!" you should be banned from commenting.

Anyway, wouldn't it make more sense for the helmets to be that color? What if the Green Bay Packers did the same sort of thing and made the face-masks of every helmet look like Vince Lombardi's glasses? Or what if Florida, at some point in the future (even though odds are good they might do it now, if given the chance) shaped their helmets like visors, in honor of Spurrier?

having been holed up in a study room for four days, i have not heard of said uniform changes. my question is this: why the hell would alabama change their uniforms? they have quite possibly the best unis in the SEC. i am not in favor of this

Charles...well put, we will address this issue next week, i have to see them first
