Scottie Pippen...are you kidding me?

Ummmm...How about just saying "Thank You Michael"

Scottie Pippen is thinking about returning to the NBA. That's all fine and good but did anyone see what he told the New York Times? Scotte Pippen: "I think people love me as much as they love Michael Jordan. Fans who understand the game, GM, the coaches I think they would rather have a Scottie than a Michael because I am an all around player, I make people around me better."

Scottie, I think Michael could have had a few more years left in his game if his back hadn't given out after carrying you for so many years.

He sounds like the insecure person that knows he's not good at something. In a vain attempt to make convince himself and others of the contrary he talks about his achievements all the time. You know who I'm talking about. The mediocre athlete that talks about how good he was in high school, about how good his high school team was, how good he played yesterday, and says things like "Man, I'm just off today, I usually hit that shot every time." If someone has to constantly talk about how good he is at something, he is insecure about his ACTUAL performance/ability. Scottie has gone delusional in his attempt to cast off the insecurity of Michael Jordan's shadow. Scottie, you had your chance. When Michael left, you tanked it. Oh wait, I forgot about that time he made everyone around him better. Remember when he SAT ON THE END OF THE BENCH, REFUSED TO GO IN THE GAME, AND POUTED BECAUSE TONI KUKOC WAS GETTING THE LAST SHOT INSTEAD OF HIM. What a team player.

Scottie Pippen should send Jordan thank you notes everyday for making him a better player. Scottie should give Michael one of his NBA rings just for good measure. B.J. Armstrong, Steve Kerr, Horace Grant, and Scottie Pippen would not have been household names in the 80's and 90's were it not for "His Airness." Just be thankful for M.J. and the gift it was to be able to play with him.

I conclude with my new favorite person of the week. In response to Scotties quote about feeling better since taking time off, Charles Barkley said: "If you take time, you feel better but you don't get better."

Feel free to chime in with any other ridiculous, "living-in-a-fantasy-world-about -yourself quotes from athletes, but this goes down as an all time great.

Scottie Pippen thinking he would be more sought after than Jordan is just ludicrous. I do not recall Jordan ever pouting and REFUSING to not come onto the floor for a tying shot situation because the play was not drawn up for him.

What a wanker... to think he was a slightly above average player that had an incredible player carry him to heights few would ever hope to achieve, and that is how he thinks of it? My, my, my, what a fool.

I'm reminded of Freddie Mitchell, His mouthing off on the Patriots after they won their 3rd super bowl in 4 years was halarious:

"To me, the Patriots are not that good. We turn it over four times, and still they only beat us by three. We're the better team. But we turned it over too much. A good team crushes that Patriot team. I'm telling you, they're not that good."

When asked about Tom Brady:

"He's like Ben Roethlisberger to me,'' Mitchell said. "They don't put him in position to make mistakes. They limit his ability to make mistakes. He's sort of like a robot."

....classic insecurity

Brian,
Are you just trying to irritate me?

I think this post was more about moving the clinton post (and subsequent genitalia comments) from the top position (i'm thankful) than anything else.

Most basketball experts agree that if you were to make an all-time defensive squad it would be composed of Dennis Johnson, Gary Payton, Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Hakeem Olajuwon.

You could even argue that MJ's career was longer and better because after Pippen's arrival, #23 never had to guard the opponent's number one scoring threat again. Just watch the ESPN Classic recap of the Bulls first championship (over the Lakers). Pippen covers Magic the entire series (and completely changes the Lakers offense). That said, there's no way Pippen could play today.

On a somewhat unrelated note. I once met a man who looked EXACTLY like Scottie Pippen but he was white. It was clearly obvious to everyone in the room, but I couldn't say anything because, hey, Pippen isn't exactly known as a looker.

Jordan would never pout because he would ALWAYS get to take the last shot. Why? BECAUSE HE WAS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF BASKETBALL!!!! Phil Jackson thought so much of Pippen's offensive talent, he gave that last shot to Tony Kukoc.

Obviously this was stupid for Pippen to say. But anyone who thinks Pippen was just "average" or "above average" is crazy and must not have watched much basketball in the mid 90s. What Kurt said about his D is right (although curiously similar to Simmons' recent article), and it is undeniable that Pippen is one of the top 50 players ever. He was arguably the best player in the NBA in the 2 years Jordan was out of the league...it was either him, Hakeem, or Ewing. Pippen was an excellent, HOF player, but he was no Jordan, obviously. I just wish he would shutup and live with his 6 rings, which, by the way, Jordan would not have won without Pippen. They needed each other.

let's just all admit that we rip off 'simmons' from time to time...

It's almost like someone who denies listening to or reading any Sinclair Ferguson before they preach.

Hakeem was the best player in the league while Jordan was out. I don't think that can be debated. His complete and total destruction of league MVP David Robinson in the '95 Western Conference Finals proved that he was the best. Not to mention the Rockets won consecutive NBA titles.

I agree to a certain extent with the point about Jordan not winning titles without Pippen. I say Jordan wins one, maybe two, without Pippen. But there would have been no dynasty. However, Pippen wins exactly zero titles without Jordan.

Apparently Scottie pippin spent all his money. This is like when a huge movie star stars in a really crappy movie and you think “Man this guy must have been hurting for money.”

...you mean like every Ben Affleck film??

I never said Pippen was not a HOF player, but he was above average. I should have been clearer in that (as he is quite good), but he did not have an all-round game like Mike, so making such a claim as he did is such an absurdity.

agreed....no one had the all around game like mike..

the only true comparison that is ever a legit conversation is Larry Bird and Michael Jordan

i've never seen a better player than Jordan....and I've never seen anyone make everyone else around him better than Bird....either way, I do love that McDonald's commercial!

this is all a shame to me because my brother got a 4 dvd set off ebay over Christmas break chronicling the six championships. it shows a recap of each season and a couple playoff games from each year. besides the "man i wish i had been older when Jordan played" comments we made every two minutes, the next most frequent comment was "dang, pippen was a hell of a lot better than i remembered him to be." pippen was a GREAT player in his own right, and for that to not be enough for him is unfortunate, because now i don't like him. and i want to like him, because he was really good. to compare himself to Jordan in any manner other than to say "i'm just glad i got to be his second fiddle for six years" is ludicrous and it pisses me off.

haven't been on sweet emotion in a week or so, and am not sure what to make of the direction it took in the response to the clinton post. i think i like the political commentary, and i think i enjoyed the females chiming in as well, but i am unsure how to reconcile that with my previously existing paradigm in which sweet emotion resided. kudos to marianne and becki either way, that was hilarious.
