Rumor Mill

After what has quickly become known as the "debacle in Gainesville", the Vol nation is in complete uproar. There is a frustration that far suceeds anything in the recent past. After a terrible 5-6 season in 2005, many Vol fans were frustrated but had much hope and faith that Fulmer could turn things around. Randy Sanders was fired, and ironically has quickly help turn around a Kentucky offense while Tennessee has stayed the same, and a return to the top was seen as a near possibility. All that is now gone, the faithful Fulmer fans are gone and are overwhelmingly convinced it is time for change. The rumors floating around now are that if Tennessee loses to Georgia, Fulmer is out at the end of the season. A loss to Alabama and he may be let go the following week. The truth is that Tennessee is not "on it's way down" nor is it a "sinking ship" - it is already a sunken ship, it is already down - Tennessee and much of the media has just been in denial. The saying goes "if your thirsty, it's b/c your already dehydrated."

So what would be next for the Vols? There are names being tossed around, but they are all rumors. For the sake of blogging, i'll share what's been going around. Bill Cower is one of the first names being tossed around. It is reported today that the Tennessee AD gave him a tour of the university, though i don't think that is directly related to him as a possible replacement but they are good friends. John Gruden is another name, he was an assistant there when he was younger and met his wife in knoxville (her family is there). It's not hard to realize he's getting bored in Tampa. Chris Richardson at Boise State is another name being tossed around, he has no connections - but is a young and successful coach. And this is totally second hand (i cannot emphasize this enough), a friend of mine is close buds with an assistant coach at Georgia Tech and he claims Steve Spurrier is interested in the job. I have no belief or thoughts on that, but it's just what i was told. All together, it's time for a change.

On another level and connection I have, the eagles fans (big shock here....) are growing tired of McNabb and Andy Reid. If things continue the way they are, don't be suprised to see McNabb on the bench in as little as 2 weeks. It is being said he is no better than 70% healthy right now. If the Eagles don't make the playoffs, the Andy Reid era will be over and it is likely McNabb will be cut. Things don't look good for the Eagles, the easiest part of their schedule is the beginning and they are 0-2 and (I can't believe I'm about to say this.........) about to host a hot Detroit Lions team.

Anyone else got any rumors????????????????????

I preface all of the following comments with the thought that I know Ole Miss is sinking faster than UT so don't even start down that route, but anyway, to let off some steam...

Why doesn't UT hire David Cutcliffe? Supposedly, he is a "can't miss hire" yet once again, 3 years away from the most unjust firing in the history of college football, the job offers do not seem to be flying his way. Funny how I was reading in the Commercial Appeal today how frustrated TN fans are with the Vol offense refusing to throw the ball downfield, settling for a bunch of underneath stuff that amounts to a bunch of nothing. What did Vol fans expect?

Below is a list of Ole Miss Rebels currently in the NFL, all 17 of which, I believe played under Cutcliffe during his 6 years at the helm (3 pros on average a year is absurd for a school like Ole Miss)

Charlie Anderson Linebacker Houston Texans
Stacy Andrews Offensive Tackle Cincinnati Bengals
Derrick Burgess Defensive End Oakland Raiders
Kendrick Clancy Defensive Tackle New Orleans Saints
Josh Cooper Defensive End New Orleans Saints
Mike Espy Wide Receiver Washington Redskins
Von Hutchins Defensive Back Houston Texans
Marcus Johnson Offensive Lineman Minnesota Vikings
Ken Lucas Cornerback Carolina Panthers
Eli Manning Quarterback New York Giants
Deuce McAllister Running Back New Orleans Saints
Trumaine McBride Cornerback Chicago Bears
Terrence Metcalf Guard Chicago Bears
Jayme Mitchell Defensive End Minnesota Vikings
Chris Spencer Center Seattle Seahawks
Todd Wade Offensive Lineman Washington Redskins
Patrick Willis Linebacker San Francisco 49ers

Looking at that list makes me want to throw up. We had our chance to solidify the program. A good number of the pieces were there. Take a look at the talent Cutcliffe inherited and brought initially, coupled with the vast underachieving he got outo of that talent, compare it to the mess he left us with, and we are still trying to put the pieces together. This year's senior class, which would have been the class Cut recruited during Eli's senior year, is basically nonexistent.

I'm so fed up with Ole Miss football, Orgeron included, but the level of frustration starts with Cut.

The only reason McNabb is struggling is because he is black...at least that is his excuse.
No one else gets criticized (hello, Peyton Manning for 8 yrs) except black QBs according to this genius.
Philly is a brutal place to play but you just make it worse saying stuff like that.

Not to split hairs, but I think Tennessee's problem is on the other side of the ball. They've put up 90 points in three games and Ainge is playing well (6/2 TD/INT). I don't understand how their defense can be this bad...41 points allowed per game is just ridiculous...

...on the flip side, that Florida/LSU game is going to be crazy.

Mark...first of all, there is very little frustration in knoxville with Cutcliffe. They hired him to fix the QB mess, and he has done that. I don't think that Tennessee fans are the one's dogging Ole Miss for firing him. He's an above average OC, but not head coach material. The reason they don't throw the ball downfield is not b/c of the playcalling, it's b/c they havn't developed any WR's, nor can they run the ball (which would allow for time to throw the ball downfield). Not sure what the Commercial appeal is, but it's a pretty crappy analysis of what's going on there. Cutcliffe has done a good job at improving what was an aweful offense. You can't do much on offense if your giving up over 40pts a game. The problem is the top with Fulmer, they need a complete overhaul.

...Luke is right, how ridiculous is this McNabb thing. What a complete whiner. If it's true that he believes that black QB's are more criticized - does that now make Rush Limbaugh's comments legit now??

i heard duke is guaranteeing a win over notre dame later this year.

The best case scenario for Notre Dame is a 1-7 start, best case. I don't even see that happening. But how great would it be if Duke beat them at the end of the year. Surely they would Fire Charlie Weiss if Notre Dame went 2-10. If not, the NAACP will jump all over them. Also, it's so time for Tennessee to get rid of Fulmer. I can't take it anymore!!

I hope they do cut McNabb, it would give the Giants somebody to stop gap with until they could draft a real quarterback (and show Eli the door).

you ole miss guys can be such whiners. Get over the Cutcliffe thing, he won you a cotton bowl. You'll never get back there, what do you have to be frustrated about? Ole Miss is at the bottom, it's where they've always been (except in 03' when Cutcliffe was there!)

We went to the Cotton Bowl because of Eli Manning. There's no debating that. If you didn't see that season in person, you have no idea what you're talking about. We went to the Cotton Bowl despite David Cutcliffe being on the sidelines.

Yes, it probably does get old hearing about Cutcliffe, but no one can defend Cutcliffe as a good head coach. It's impossible. To Mark's point, if he was such a good head coach, he'd have already had some job offers. He's a good career assistant and should never be confused as a good head coach.

True the 2003 year for Ole Miss, as good as it was, could have even been better (should have beaten Memphis). Let's stop this though. Cutcliffe is a good offensive mind, a great QB coach, but doesn't have what it takes to be a Head Coach. At least not at the SEC level. End of Discussion.

In Philly news, if the Eagles lose to the Lions this weekend, expect McNabb to be on the bench in the next few weeks. He will be booed in Philly this weekend for his comments. The media and radio shows have been crucifying him for the HBO interview. His teammates are not defending him either.

I question whether Mike Espy counts as an NFL player...

...on another note: the Eagles are going to get smoked Sunday. I think every Philly DB is hurt and now they have to face Roy Williams, Calvin Johnson, and Mike Furrey. By the way, how does Mike Martz find these white receivers? Does he create them in labs somewhere?
