A complete dissaster

I'm just going to continue the conversation we have going from the previous post. Here are my last comments.....

Georgia, Oklahoma, and USC all are hot teams. I think all those teams are better than LSU, but LSU won their conference and "survived" the most brutal regular season of all those teams. The only caveot with Georgia is that they are the only one of their teams that isn't a conference champion. I respect Mark Richt's comments for telling it like it is.

Andrew...how can you say the Pac 10 is not a good conference?? Oregon was hot until Dixon went down (which does actually say they were a 1 man team), Arizona State is pretty good, and of course USC is. I do think the Big 12 is the second best conference. It's not brutal, but it is not a 2 team conference this year like it has been for several years.
The biggest crap about this is how the BCS AWARDS Ohio State for not playing this past weekend. LSU deserved to be awarded for playing a championship game of a conference in which they were clearly the best team. I think the same with Oklahoma, they destroyed the #1 team in the nation. The BCS cannot continue to award these teams from conferences that don't have to play a 13th game. If Missouri didn't have to play that championship game, they would be in the NC game. I personally think it should be LSU vs. Oklahoma

Not that it is as big of a deal, but Missouri got messed over more than any other team. I mean their Kansas matchup was heralded as winner goes to BCS. They win, but then get punished for losing in Championship...and Kansas goes.

I am pro-whatever causes controversy in the BCS. I hate it. Go LSU...I hope they beat the snot out of the Buckeyes

Basically, the Big Ten is the cause of all the problems. If we could just go ahead and relegate them all to I-AA or FCS or whatever it's called now, we'd be doing everyone a favor. At least the Pac-10 makes their teams play 9 conference games so you don't miss someone. To sum it up, Ohio State & Illinois are going to get exposed. They do not belong with these other teams.

Kurt,
How dare you go against my Fighting Illini, I will hurt you!

I like Oregon, but I hate USC (that is all I have to say about Pac-10 football.

Illinois in the BCS is pathetic. It should be known that the Big ten has refused time and time again despite network and AD requests to create a conference championship.

How much longer before the Media finally sees what has been obvious for nearly a decade.

Alex,

I give it another two years before the Big Ten gets its act together. Already there are those in the Media who are calling them out. Even though many of them (herb-street, for example) are in face positions, they have to catch up soon. Interestingly enough, i believe a random event, like Les Miles not going to Michigan will force the Big 10 to do something. The talking heads can only have influence for so long. Eventually they will have to give in to reality.

Alright. Geaux Tigers. I think it is funny that a "Michigan Man" who was likely the first pick for the job at Michigan is facing the team that he hates the most in the National Championship game. By the way, Les Miles is from Ohio. Ironic, don't you think?

1) mizzou got screwed more than anybody. i mean you beat two of the bcs teams, what a crock. that to me says more than need be said about the B(c)S. if they would have been idle, they'd be in the championship game, instead they're going to the meineke car care bowl or something.

2) i'm not ready to crown ohio st. as big 11 champs just yet. i mean, they didn't play everybody in their conference (like the pac 10 does) so who's to say they're the true champions? as far as i'm concerned uga performed in their conference as well as ohio state did in theirs, and obviously uga didn't win its conference, so how can we say for certain osu won theirs?

3) for the record, i don't think uga should be in the title game, just want to make sure that's out there.

4) kirk herbstriet lobbied HARD last year for michigan to play in the title game, when obviously neither osu nor mich weren't qualified to be there apparently, and yet this year decides you HAVE to win your conference to be considered.

5) i've never been excited about basketball season in december, especially when our coach has expelled our two best starters (who are still elible under NCAA and SEC regulations) i'm just so disillusioned with all of this and feel powerless to do anything about it. i hate college football. i put too much time, effort, money, emotion, and energy into something where my return on investment is 0. i quit. for now.

The reason no one cares about college basketball in December is because there is a huge playoff so a regular season loss (or win) is rendered virtually meaningless (when contrasted with college football). Something to remember when everyone and their uncle cries for a college football playoff. I'm not saying what we have is perfect, but the point is there.

In truth, I think the BCS began to breakdown after the 2003 LSU Championship. Because USC cried so much, they rid system of the Strength of Schedule component and lowered the computer weight. Now we have something that is very much like the original (pre-BCS) system, where the polls decide almost everything.

Joel, great point about UGA and OSU. I agree 100%.

Kirk Herbstreit has become the biggest disgrace in college football media. It is astonishing how Corso has become to be something of a genious sitting next to him on saturday mornings.

Either way, Joel has a great point. The huge argument for 'anti-Michigan' people last year was that they didn't win their conference, the 'pro-Michigan' people (ie Herbrstreit, Desmond Howard, everyone on ABC) said it shouldnt matter, those are the best 2 teams. The same people are switching sides concerning Georgia.

Get this: this is how we are now deciding college football "...um this year....i think this should be the qualifications, wouldn't you agree honey??......"

It is a changed opinion every-year.

...also, somebody explain to me how the media continually refers to USC as national champs in 2003 and then says 'oh yeah' LSU won it too, and then talks about USC's "back to back" in 2004 but has never mentions Auburn????

I hate the argument that "the regular season is our playoff." That is ludicrous for numerous reasons:
1. It isn't a playoff b/c the best teams from different conferences rarely play each other.
2. It isn't a playoff because you can LOSE A GAME and still have a chance to win the title.
3. It isn't a playoff because rankings/seedings are not decided by who wins on the field, but by 300 media people who rarely watch all of the games. The preseason rankings, which come out in August before anyone has played a snap, determine the BCS title game more than just about anything. If LSU had not been ranked #2 preseason they would have no chance of being in the game. Similarly, Kansas went 11-1, but because they were unranked in the preseason poll they have a huge hill to climb to get any sort of "ranking" respect.

The regular season is not a freaking playoff. Give me a damn break.

This crap happens to me every year...i get pissed off during the bowls and keep coming back for more. I can't wait for the big 10 and pac 10 commissioners to die so we can move on to a playoff of some sort.

Luke, please tell us what you really think. No seriously. I never like the argument that the regular season is like a playoff but never thought through why i didn't like it. You have allowed me to be now have firm arguments for my convictions, and I didn't have to use my brain. I appreciate that.

Well Said Luke...I commend that explanation, very valid and true. I think some of the media secretly like having "power"......

Alex, I have the same questions about 2003. USC won one component of the BCS Championship. It'd be like Dan or Dave (blast from the past) winning one event (like the hurdles) in the Decathalon and saying they won the whole thing. There was a great picture floating around the internet that said Three-peat USC style and showed Nick Saban, Pete Carroll, and Mack Brown holding up the Glass Football from trophy. Hilarious.

Anyway, I've always been against a playoff because of how adversely it affects the regulars season (see: college basketball) and the fact is, it doesn't matter what I think because we will never have one. The extra revenue for smaller schools and the extra practice time coaches get are too valuable to give up for the good of the elite programs of the world. What I do think would be cool is a plus one kind of thing. They already have it in place with the addition of the National Championship Bowl. Why not just take four teams and make it a mini-playoff. There would still be people griping, but it would be better.

I also think that winning your conference should not be a factor in the BCS until the Big Ten & Pac Ten have a championship game. Mizzou and UGA are classic examples of how playing in a real conference is a detriment under that kind of system.

One last thing, the winner of the SEC Championship ought to get an automatic bid into any sort of playoff (if there ever was one). Just look at LSU's record and how many bowl teams they faced. Good grief!

At 11:52 AM, Blogger Alex said...

Kurt...valid concerns about a playoff negating the excitement of the regular season, but college basketball's season was exciting when they only had a 16 team playoff. Also, a 35 game schedule and playing each conference team twice hurts it.

The playoff of 8 teams is what I long for, six conference champions and 2 at large selections. It would still take an outstanding regular season, and the losses would be crucial b/c they could keep you out of your conference title game.

...also, bragging rights are so huge in college football, no one could ever downplay how big it is for some teams to beat another (Tennessee/Florida, Texas/Oklahoma, Michigan/Ohio State, Alabama/Auburn, and for you personally....Ole Miss/Miss. State). I don't think anything could take away from the significance of those games.
