New SE hall of fame inductee

The amount of media coverage that this press conference tyraid has recieved has in no way been overblown. I'm a few days behind on this, but Mike Gundy is certainly now in the Sweet Emotion Hall of Fame. He is our kind of man. His reasons for induction are:



1) He put the media back in it's place. The media attempts to exercise too much power and have more of a voice in spors than the sport itself is willing to hear. It controls way too much and thinks they know more than they do. He totally put them in their place.



2) He humiliated a woman who attempted to write an article about football



3) He proved women know nothing about football and shouldn't be allowed to have a public voice in it.



4) He defended his players and protected them.....by lashing out on an idiot woman

5) He reminded us again of all the great press conference flip-outs by coaches



"you play to win the game"...."they were who we thought they were!!"..."playoffs?? playoffs?"..."F*&% those f*&%$' fans who come out here and say they're Cub fans that are supposed to be behind you rippin' every F*&%$' thing you do"..."practice dawg, not a game, we talkin' bout practice"..."we couldn't do diddley poo on offense, we sucked, we got our a@$ kicked"..."I'm gonna KILL YOU!"..."put that in your pipe and smoke it!"..."the kids are playing their tails off and the coaches are screwing it up!"..

The journalist asked, 'What do you think is the last thought in the head of a deer before you shoot him? Is it, 'Are you my friend?' or is it 'Are you the one who killed my brother?'

Rumor Mill

After what has quickly become known as the "debacle in Gainesville", the Vol nation is in complete uproar. There is a frustration that far suceeds anything in the recent past. After a terrible 5-6 season in 2005, many Vol fans were frustrated but had much hope and faith that Fulmer could turn things around. Randy Sanders was fired, and ironically has quickly help turn around a Kentucky offense while Tennessee has stayed the same, and a return to the top was seen as a near possibility. All that is now gone, the faithful Fulmer fans are gone and are overwhelmingly convinced it is time for change. The rumors floating around now are that if Tennessee loses to Georgia, Fulmer is out at the end of the season. A loss to Alabama and he may be let go the following week. The truth is that Tennessee is not "on it's way down" nor is it a "sinking ship" - it is already a sunken ship, it is already down - Tennessee and much of the media has just been in denial. The saying goes "if your thirsty, it's b/c your already dehydrated."

So what would be next for the Vols? There are names being tossed around, but they are all rumors. For the sake of blogging, i'll share what's been going around. Bill Cower is one of the first names being tossed around. It is reported today that the Tennessee AD gave him a tour of the university, though i don't think that is directly related to him as a possible replacement but they are good friends. John Gruden is another name, he was an assistant there when he was younger and met his wife in knoxville (her family is there). It's not hard to realize he's getting bored in Tampa. Chris Richardson at Boise State is another name being tossed around, he has no connections - but is a young and successful coach. And this is totally second hand (i cannot emphasize this enough), a friend of mine is close buds with an assistant coach at Georgia Tech and he claims Steve Spurrier is interested in the job. I have no belief or thoughts on that, but it's just what i was told. All together, it's time for a change.

On another level and connection I have, the eagles fans (big shock here....) are growing tired of McNabb and Andy Reid. If things continue the way they are, don't be suprised to see McNabb on the bench in as little as 2 weeks. It is being said he is no better than 70% healthy right now. If the Eagles don't make the playoffs, the Andy Reid era will be over and it is likely McNabb will be cut. Things don't look good for the Eagles, the easiest part of their schedule is the beginning and they are 0-2 and (I can't believe I'm about to say this.........) about to host a hot Detroit Lions team.

At it again

If you are tired of Lou Holtz, I am sorry. I know we have pointed out 43,000 ridiculous things that he said over the past year and a half. You would think the law of repetition (did I just make up that law?) would kick in at some point and I would cease to be amazed at his comments. However, last night during halftime of the West Virginia game, I found myself laughing out loud again and then rewinding on Tivo to make sure my ears had heard his statement correctly. He reached 43,001 ridiculous comments in startling fashion.

Surprise, Surprise, the folk at ESPN were talking about the Michigan/Notre Dame game. In the process of gabbing back and forth, Lou took center stage and said (I am paraphrasing because direct quotes are just too hard to remember from him: "If Notre Dame loses and starts out 0-3, I just don't see anyway they can get back to a BCS bowl for the third straight year."

Is anyone else in the world honestly thinking Notre Dame still has a shot at a BCS bowl if they can just get by Michigan. I think I saw his counterparts even start giggling at his comment. Wow!

Cheaters

I already can't stand the Patriots and this morning gave me one more good reason to continue those feelings. The New England Patriots were caught video taping the NY Jet's signals. Now, I'm sure many excuse the actions because "everybody does it." Whether that is true or not, I have no clue. All I know is that the Patriots were caught cheating and it gives me one more reason to cheeer against them. As if the Pat's being caught wasn't enought, the way they were trapped was even more humorous. Apparently Bill Belichick was a jerk to Eric Mangini back in the day (big surprise). In return, Eric kindly tipped off the Jets on Bill's signal stealing system.

I want to know your thoughts. Should they be punished? Is it that big of a deal? I hope the commish sticks it to them, but maybe that is just sour grapes.

Mountains and Valleys

For a college football fan, there is nothing better than a win and nothing worse than a loss. After a big win you become convinced your team can run the table and that the gameday crew is going to give you lots of props. But after a loss, it's time to fire the coach. Within a matter of 7 days, you can go from a total high to rock bottom.

An opening season loss (like the one I went through with Tennessee) is about the most dissapointing thing for a fan. All those hours of internet page reading, research, catching the daily radio programs, following ESPN hoping they mention your teams name, spending more money than you should on pre-season magazines..all of it feels in vain, like a complete waist. You just want the season to be over, imagining none of this ever happened. Fire the coach...our players suck....is there any NFL team I can cheer for......where is the jack daniels?.......bring on basketball. The pessimism is exagerrated to the umpth degree. You wonder if your team can beat anybody. You can't turn on your computer, have no desire to watch ESPN, and avoid talk radio like the plague...in fact you pop in a CD you find in your glove-compartment to get your mind off of football. NCAA 2008 on X-box or playstation is out of the question. A round of golf sounds really good about now. It's usually thursday or friday before you can even check espn.com again.

But......

A win the next week (like Tennessee did saturday) turns everything around. The optimism returns. The desire to read EVERY POSSIBLE message board and remotely related football page returns. Phone calls go out left and right, in fact you even 'call in' to your favorite radio program to give your two cents on a never-ending pointless conversation. Why in the crap does ESPN not have the highlights of our game in the little video box? If you taped the game, you re-watch it 3-4 times during the week. Their is enormous excitement for the next game, probably too much. You smile at more people, treat your wife a bit better, tip your waitress an extra dollar or two. The air smells better, it seems like you find parking meters with 30-45 minutes still on them.

The point is that it is certainly exagerrated. Some fans (Georgia, Auburn, Ole Miss) are now in the dumps, experiencing solid first week wins and then frustrating 2nd week losses. Cheer up, a lot of football left to play. By wednesday or thursday it'll be ok, you'll start reading web pages and stuff again. What makes it soo good is not how awesome it feels to win, but how pissed you get when you lose.

So drink your sorrows away, make your nasty phone calls, write your mean emails, or boycott....but come thursday or friday, get on the wagon again. It's football season, get into it. There is no greater hobby for a man.

NFL preview

While we don't spend as many thoughts or hours reading and discussing the NFL, it's here. Instead of a full-blown preview, we'll just share a few thoughts on the upcoming season.

- How is John Kitna still in the NFL? Again, Matt Millen has a real eye for talent.

- I think the Patriots have become the New York Yankees of the NFL. Signing used up players with all-star name potential. After the Yankees started buying everyone they stopped winning championships...i hope the same is the case with the evil patriots, emperor Billichick, and their bastard children in L.A., They become the most obnoxious franchise since the 1989 Detroit Pistons

- Ladanian Tomlison is a fantasy football dream, Norv Turner is football fan's nightmare. Can all of San Diego's talent overcome his incompetance?

- Rex Grossman is still with the bears...unbelievable, yet their division is pathetic.

- Larry Johnson will be so overused that he will retire or die by the end of the season.

- The Raiders sign Michael Vick in October after starting 0-6, there is a huge protest just across the rainbow bay.

- Eli Manning must take his game to the next level, Donnovan McNabb needs to play one season w/o getting hurt, Tony Romo needs to be consistent, and the Washington Redskins just need some talent.

- Bobby Petrino watches Louiville go undefeated and Brian Brohm throw 50 touchdowns, while he tries to win with Joey Harringon and no WR's. To boost team spirit, Fans suggest the team wear gold chains on their uniforms. Each day he walks to his office, "What the Hell was I thinking coming to the ATL?"



- Carolina wins 3 in a row, loses 4 in a row, wins 3 in a row, loses 5 in a row. And then they realize that Jake Delhome is their QB...oops

Lou Holtz: Take Two

While everyone else was overwhelmed by the Appalachian State victory this Saturday, Lou Holtz simply had this to say in the post-game. "The Appalachian State victory over Michigan wasn't even an upset." Week in week out he never ceases to disappoint.

Surprises from the weekend:

1) Tennessee's performance. I really was hoping for another SEC dominated game. I was sincerely disappointed. Alas, I did hear about some vintage Cutcliffe. 4th and goal from the four, let's throw a 2 yard out to our runningback.

2) Auburn's poor performance - looks like their defense must carry them all the way.

3) Texas

4) Lou Holtz was allowed on camera yet again.

5) Seth Adams first drive with the Rebels. He actually looked poised and actually threw for more yards than Schaeffer did in a game last year. No promises for the future but....

6) My computer locked up in our fantasy football draft last night. I had the number one pick and so didn't fret too much believing that my computer would draft Ladainian Tomlinson anyway. Much to my surprise it read as follows: Who Dat (my team name) drafted Laurence Maroney. Probably the only person in the world that took him with my first pick.
